wtf is props?

It’s 2007. Somewhere on the Isle of Skye, rain is coming down sideways. Inside a rental cottage, a teenage boy opens up a copy of Ableton Live and it’s love at first synth preset. He starts recording in the sounds of mugs, creaky chairs, and other unsuspecting household objects. A solo project is accidentally born; props

Skip past ten years of hitting drums in indie bands (read: carrying gear for no money), and props begins to take form - part art project, part existential coping mechanism.

In 2022, props releases songs — a scrappy and (in)sincere mixtape born from climate anxiety and production rabbit holes. It gets picked up by BBC 6Music, Elton John’s Rocket Hour, Clash, Wonderland, Spotify’s Fresh Finds, and even lands a sync on Made In Chelsea.

Musically, props sounds like a glitter cannon going off in a therapy session. Lyrics about societal collapse float over euphoric hooks and bright, hyperactive arrangements. Think MGMT on a comedown, or The Strokes but they’ve just read the IPCC report.

These days, props divides time between writing songs, dodging late-stage capitalism, and working on community-led environmental projects in South London — proof that optimism isn’t dead yet.

In 2025, props returns with new music that’s louder, weirder, and more direct. 🙃
